Generally, in order to begin the process of closing the loop efficiently, we need to separate different recyclable materials at source. Once materials have been mixed up together, it is labour intensive and, therefore, more costly to sort them again. There is also the very real danger that they will be too contaminated and, therefore, not recyclable.
